People ask me dozens of questions each day in an effort to make the most educated decision on buying a new smartphone. From the obvious to the most overanalyzed, complex inquires, I have heard them all. But not a day goes by that someone doesn’t ask me some version of the following:
“What is the best smartphone out right now?”
This question is by far the most frequently asked, and it is actually one of my favorites. It’s a fun question to try to answer because it holds no boundaries. There are no limits to what I can say in rebuttal. Oftentimes I will follow the question with a series of questions myself. I think most people are looking to find not the best overall smartphone, but just the best phone for them as an individual, even though in most instances the question isn’t asked this way. So asking things about work habits, personality, and family life can help reveal which smartphone is best for them.
With the phone and tablet craze taking over, online research before making a purchase has skyrocketed in the last five years. People crave non-biased and honest advice before spending money on a certain product or with a manufacturer.
To answer the need for impartial review, PhoneDog.com recently launched their PhoneDog Media Offical Smartphone Ranking program. This program consists of a People’s Choice ranking and an Expert Choice Ranking panel. For the Expert Choice Ranking panel, PhoneDog invited mobile experts from Best Buy Mobile Magazine (including me!) and other tech blogs to create smartphone rankings similar to the Billboard Charts for music.
When making my picks I try to take a very general, holistic approach. Generally when a device is being purchased at a high rate, it has unmistakable features and value that is being recognized by a large percent of the market. On the other side of the spectrum, if a device doesn’t seem to be selling well, it could be an indication that it does not compare well to other devices in its genre, and finding accessories for it in the future could become challenging.
I really enjoy being a part of this ranking program because it allows me to give honest feedback to the smartphone customers of the world. People deserve to get honest answers about technology. Not having to rely on manufacturers for all information or opinions regarding their products is a step in the right direction.
PhoneDog also has a People’s Choice Ranking program. You can make your vote heard! Votes are tabulated weekly, with final ranking results posted each Monday morning.
