Top no-contract talk and text cell phones

Don’t need the Internet on your phone? Just looking to talk and text while not paying for a bunch of extras that you won’t use? Well there are options available to suit those needs! PayLo by Virgin Mobile and Tracfone both offer great no-contract cell phone services that are built around talk and texting. They both offer low rates and a variety of devices to match what you want in a phone!

PayLo by Virgin Mobile is powered by Sprint’s network. They have three major plans to choose from depending on how much you will want to talk or text during your month. Plans start off at $40 per month, which will give you unlimited talk and unlimited texting. If you don’t need all of that, they do also offer $30 per month and $20 per month plans. The $30 plan gives you 1500 talk minutes and 1500 texts, while the $20 per month package lets you talk for 400 minutes and then each text message is 15 cents.

PayLo’s phones also come in several options from the basic flip-phone to slide-out keyboard devices to phones with full QWERTY keyboards on the front. Take a look at their newest device, the Kyocera Brio, which features Bluetooth for hands free-talking or file sharing, 2.5” color display, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. This device and others from PayLo are really affordable and will give you great features to get the job done.

Another major no-contract carrier is Tracfone. Tracfone offers several plans that are sure to meet your needs. If you don’t want to worry about adding minutes to your phone every month, Tracfone will take care of you with an option to let you keep your minutes for up to a full year! Plus, with most new Tracfone devices they will double your minutes. For example, if you purchased a 60-minute phone card, Tracfone will double it to give you 120 minutes!

They also have a full touch screen phone from LG. The LG 840G features a 3.2” color touch screen, 2.0 megapixel camera with video recorder, and a hands-free speakerphone.

For mobile phone plans and devices that will give you only what you need without a lot of extras, look to PayLo and Tracfone to take care of you. They both offer great low cost service with low cost devices. Even better, Best Buy Mobile can activate and set up these devices for you so you don’t have to worry about it!

  1. I am looking for a low cost smart phone. We currently have a talk/text pay as you go plan with Verizon that costs us about $100.00 a year. The prices for adding data seem really high and we are almost ready to give up the idea of having a smart phone to take pictures and for in store shopping.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

  2. Judy,

How much do you talk on the phone and text in an average month? Also, for your internet services are you just wanting it for shopping?

    • At present we get $100.00 loaded onto out phone from Verison once a year. We use about 6 hours per year and have at this point 9 hours left and due to add another years worth in April. I have been looking at tracfone, but need to see the phones.
I think I would use the smart phone primarily to shop, get online coupons while in the stores, do shopping lists, take pictures that we can send via the phone. Would not use it for email – have a nook for that. We currently do not text at all, and probably will not in the future.

      • Judy,

An option you may consider would be daily plans which would allow you to use your phone as much as you want that day and only charge you on those days you use it. Also, you can always stop in one of our stores to check out our buyers guide that has all of the plans in one spot, and have a consultant look over coverage maps to find the perfect fit for you!

  3. Hi Judy,

I was looking into both Virgin Mobile and Tracfone for cell phone service. my contract with Verizon is up and want to go with something reliable, and no contracts!!! The fees are unreal too! I don’t need or want web on my phone, I just mainly use it for talk and text. I almost used 100 minutes for talk out of the 700 on my family plan I have now, and we have unlimited texting, which that I would like to have. I see Virgin Mobile has beyond Talk and the Pay Lo. Which one out of that do you think would be better? Also, do I have to worry about extra fees or roaming charges with any of these plans?! Are they reliable?!

  4. Ooops, the previous message was meant for Nick!

    • Theresa,

Beyond Talk is great for those who are looking for internet on their phones. If you are just looking for Talk and Text I would suggest looking at PayLo or Tracfone. To narrow down from these options you will want to look at coverage maps for your location. Also, are you just wanting to take your line to a no-contract plan, or would there be other lines as well? As far as roaming is concerned, that will not be a problem with the major no-contract providers. In regards to extra fees, the only thing would be anything that is government mandated such as a 911 tax. Most of the time you just pay one flat rate for a top-up card, and that will cover service for the month.

  5. Hi Nick,
Thank you for your response. It was helpful. Yes, talk and text is basically what I want. I don’t care bout having web. I live in Freehold, NJ so I think the coverage is good, I’ll check it out. It would be a line for me, and my daughter wants to get her own as well. Is any one service better than the other? Do you know anything about Boost Mobile or Straight Talk? I was looking into both of those as well as Virgin and Tracfone. What, out of the 4 would you recommend? Thanks!

    • Theresa,

I checked your coverage on Boost, Virgin, and Tracfone and you have pretty good coverage in your area. Boost and Virgin offer great plans but are geared more towards smartphones. I would suggest looking at PayLo’s plans instead, which will be the same coverage, but they won’t offer smartphones. Tracfone is also really good for what you are looking for. I wouldn’t say that one is better than the other it is going to come down to which offers a plan that is better for you. As far as Straight Talk is concerned that is a carrier that we don’t have, so I don’t know their plans as well as TracFone and PayLo. I hope this helps!

  6. Hello, I have an old tracfone with over 4100 minutes left on it. Can I get a new phone with camera from tracfone and keep my minutes and old phone number. Because I don’t use it much I have allowed my time to run out. Can I keep my minutes and phone number when I come to Best buy for my new tracfone?

  7. I will do this within the next two days. Because of weather. Price of phone that has camera and coupon sender whatever that is. Text and talk?

    • Nick,
I have an android through Verizon. I want to decrease my cost and wounder if any of the no-contract providers allow me to use my old phone. It works well and has a great calender on it. I was thinking about the Virgin Mobile. What do you think?

  8. Rene,

I apologize for the late response. If your phone is still active we can keep your number and switch your minutes over to your new device. We have several Tracfone devices that have a camera, but as far as a coupon sender, do you have a specific application in mind?

  9. Mike,

Unfortunately you probably will not be able to use your Verizon phone on Virgin mobile. You might be able to switch to a Verizon Pre-Paid plan though, however for that you would need to talk directly with Verizon about. If you like the plans for Virgin we do have a lot of great android devices and we can help you find the right one!

  10. Hi Nick.
I’m looking for a plan for 2-3 phones for Eau Claire, WI (54701). We have Verizon now and love the coverage, but the price is out of hand. We’d like unlimited text (including pictures preferably) and 650 minutes for sure. Data would be nice (for getting coupons, checking GPS, some light surfing), but isn’t necessary. Ideally I’d like to keep the cost at $100 or less. What do you recommend?

    • Hi Becky!
A few options I would consider are Virgin Mobile and Net10. I have checked the coverage for your zip code, and both of these carriers will have service in your general area. However, I would strongly suggest talking with someone in your area that can give you a better idea as to where you might have trouble with coverage. As far as plans go with Virgin Mobile they offer a $35 a month per line plan which gives you unlimited texting and unlimited data and 300 minutes. Then with Net10 they offer a family plan which you can get 3 lines with Unlimited Talk, Text and Web for $130 a month! I think either of these plans would be good for you! We have a Best Buy Mobile inside the Oakwood Mall in Eau Claire where our consultants would be happy to go over all the details with you and get you activated! Hopefully this helps!

  11. I currently have virgin mobile (pay you go), im looking into a new phone plan (inexspensive) for myself AND my 10 yr. I dont really talk or text much, not sure about my daughter-this is all new. I dont know anything about different service plans. E.g. talk & text only vs. talk, text, data, and/or internet? (I have looked at Zact and Consumer Celluar) I live Peyton CO 80831. Any suggestions to get me started?

  12. I now have Virgin Mobil requiring up date of $20.00 every 90 days or loose phone number and service regardless of minutes remaining. I only use my phone when I travel or will be away from home over 24 hours. Iam looking for a phone plan where I can buy minutes as needed not on a calendar plan ie every 90 days. Is there such a plan ? If so what company provides it?

  13. Is there any talk/text services that I can transfer same verizon phone/same number to for the $30/month????

  14. Is there a pre-paid phone that has the talk to text feature? Preferable a tracfone

  15. I have a track phone and no text plan. I have heard from some people that it only takes away from your miniuets. It this true or will i get a bill at the end of the month for texting

  16. How can I convert my ATT iphone 3s to a straight talk phone?

  17. Help! I have a Paylo phone (Kyocera Brio): Talk/Text/E-Mail/Internet — BUT CAN’T SEE VIDEOS/YouTube — or download ANYTHING! Keeps telling me I need a “handler” but I can’t even download one. Is there a Paylo phone that has ALL of the above including YouTube and music capabilities that comes with a “handler”?

    • If you purchased this at Best Buy, Marie, you may want to bring it for assistance.

  18. Is it possible to switch a Verizon IPhone 4S to Straight Talk? We are in the metro DC area and Straight Talk piggy backs on the Verizon network here. We are finished with the required 2 year contract through Verizon and to add another line with texting only would almost double our monthly payment because we have a very old plan.

  19. I am looking for a text only plan….does this exist in the cell phone world? No talk, no internet, no smart phone. We just want a basic phone for texting. Any advice on this? Thank you!

  20. I currently have verizon with poor coverage in my home. My zip code is 98031. I am looking for a new phone that takes good photos and a plan that would be unlimited talk and text only. I am ready to dump verizon because they are not listening to my needs and pushing the data plans. I was considering metro pcs service but they have a lot of bad reviews. Any suggestions.

  21. I have recently retired and rely on SS and a small nest egg. I am trying to trim the fat if you know what I mean. I have a Droid 3G smart phone with Verizon. My usual bill runs around $81 for 300 min. and unlimited internet.I do not use the internet so that is wasted. I would like a phone that is unlimited talk and text with a capablitiy of pics and video. My area code is 850 Apalachicola, Florida 32320. Also I have had this same number for close to 20 years, will I be able to keep that number? Thanks for your reply.

  22. Need a phone for my son. He is just getting out of jail and PO says no camera and no internet. Help

    • Cindy, I don’t know if you solved your son’s phone problem, but we needed a phone with no camera and no internet for security reasons. Oh–and the lowest bills in the world. Net10 cheapest if you talk more than about 500 minutes a month and Tracfone cheapest if you talk more. Net10 phone to get, I think, is samsung SGH-T201G. One of the few without a camera. And way reliable.
Signed, long long time user of no contract phones

  23. I currently use at&t pay as you go. I make very few calls. I am looking for a phone and plan that I take pictures and upload them onto my computer and listen to iHeartRadio. Where should I look?

  24. Please help.

We have two adults in our house and need to get new phones. We are comming out of a family plan from Sprint. In a pefect world we would get one new phone and keep my IPhone 5S.

We use talk, text, and data. How much, I could not estminate. We would prefer unlimited data. It does not have to be exclusively high speed data however. Contract-indifferent I guess, but in the end it would not hurt our feelings to not have a contract if all things are relatively equal.

Have been looking into the Straight Talk? Located in Mankato, MN 56001.

Any insight from someone knowledgable is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  25. Sorry, one new phone, and two new “service plans”.

  26. I am looking for a new phone. I presently have an old “flip phone” just for talk with Verizon. I would like a phone that is capable of talk (less than 200 minutes a month), text and pictures — no internet. I don’t want to pay for something I don’t use, but it seems Verizon just doesn’t have much to offer unless you want a smart phone. I want to keep it under $40 a month and I want a good quality phone and service. It seems a lot of carriers don’t offer great quality service. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks.
